Beware Repeat: Red Chilli and Bird's Eye Chilli Fuel Iduladha Inflation
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Pudji Ismartini, Head of Distribution and Services Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), revealed that inflation typically occurs during Iduladha from 2022 to 2025, except in 2024 when deflation was recorded. However, she noted that inflation during the Kurban holiday remains lower than that during Eid al-Fitr.
“Inflation during Iduladha has generally been lower than during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr from 2022 to 2025,” she stated during the 2026 Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting, broadcast on the Ministry of Home Affairs’ YouTube channel on Monday, 25 May 2026. “Except in 2022, when Iduladha inflation was higher than Eid al-Fitr,” she added.
Regarding inflation contributors, food, beverage, and tobacco commodities have been the top contributors since 2022-2025, except in 2024. Volatile food prices have been the main drivers of inflation during Iduladha in 2022 and 2025.
“Commodities under volatile food prices are the primary contributors to Iduladha inflation,” Pudji explained. “Among them, red chilli and bird’s eye chilli frequently drive inflation during the holiday,” she said.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has set 27 May 2026 as the date for Iduladha. According to the Ministry of Trade’s SP2KP (Commodity Price Monitoring System), red curly chilli prices rose 0.68% to Rp46,942 per kg on Friday, 22 May 2026, from Rp46,624 the previous day. Bird’s eye red chilli prices increased 1.28% to Rp67,518 per kg from Rp66,663.
