Beware politicians
Beware politicians
bearing gifts
From Media Indonesia
As the 2004 general election nears, we should be alert for
various political occurrences that could prevent the people from
going to the polls, such as political violence and security
disturbances. Behind the tension and violence that may arise,
some politicians may be trying to benefit their own interests.
Meanwhile, the executive, legislative and judicial organs at
all levels are preoccupied by negotiations and compromises in
their efforts to secure votes. The public has a right to be
suspicious of the statements made by the politicians as
experience has shown that such speeches are often little more
than rhetoric.
The public should also be wary of the promises of some
presidential candidates, who all claim to be holier than thou.
Though they are not banned from joining the presidential race, we
should remember that these figures were responsible for violence
both before and after the nation launched its reform drive.
