Beware of WhatsApp Impersonating Prosecutors' Office Officials or Staff

Jakarta – Screenshots of WhatsApp conversations have been circulating showing messages from a number using names and profile pictures with prosecutors’ office attributes.

In these messages, the sender greets the recipient and introduces themselves as an official or employee of the prosecutors’ office. The message content gives the impression that the sender is an official representative of the prosecutors’ institution.

The contact display using names and attributes resembling prosecutors’ officials could potentially lead message recipients to believe that the number genuinely originates from the prosecutors’ office.

Clarification

In fact, this information is false. The Brebes District Prosecutors’ Office has stated that the WhatsApp number in circulation claiming to represent prosecutors’ officials or staff is not owned by the official Brebes District Prosecutors’ Office.

The Prosecutors’ Office has also emphasised that the prosecutors’ institution never requests money, assistance, or personal data from the public through WhatsApp.

Therefore, the public is urged not to respond to messages from suspicious numbers, not to provide personal data, and not to conduct any form of transaction if they receive similar messages.

The public is also advised to immediately ignore or block such numbers and increase vigilance against various fraud schemes, particularly phishing scams that frequently impersonate specific institutions or officials.
