Beware of Scams Disguised as E-Commerce Affiliate Programmes: Recognise the Methods and Characteristics!
The public is urged to heighten vigilance against the proliferation of a new scam modus operandi that misappropriates affiliate programmes from e-commerce platforms. This scheme typically entices potential victims with promises of large commissions and instant additional income. Scammers frequently exploit the names of well-known online shopping platforms to convince victims. The operation usually begins with messages on chat applications or social media offering side jobs as affiliates. Potential victims are initially asked to complete simple tasks, such as liking, commenting, or purchasing specific products. Once the victim is hooked, the scammers start requesting money transfers under pretexts like registration fees, deposits, or requirements to unlock access to “high-level tasks” promising greater profits. In executing their schemes, scammers often display fake promotional materials such as “VIP Affiliate” programmes complete with fantastical profit calculation tables. The misuse of official institution logos is also common to create an impression of credibility, although the information is entirely hoaxes. It must be emphasised that official affiliate programmes on e-commerce platforms never charge registration fees. Users can join for free and only earn commissions based on actual transactions generated from promoting products via official links. The public is reminded not to be easily swayed by irrational offers and is strictly prohibited from sharing personal data, such as OTP codes, with anyone. Always verify any information related to affiliate programmes through the official customer service within the relevant e-commerce application. Enhancing digital literacy remains the primary key to preventing the public from falling into various increasingly evolving online scams.
