Beware of scams disguised as affiliate programmes, always verify offers
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The public is urged to heighten their vigilance against the proliferation of scams disguised as affiliate programmes that promise additional income through enticing large commissions. Scammers often misuse the names of affiliate programmes from e-commerce platforms, such as Shopee, to convince potential victims. The modus operandi generally begins with messages sent via chat applications or social media, offering jobs as affiliates. Victims are then asked to complete simple tasks, such as liking, commenting, or purchasing specific products. Subsequently, the perpetrators request transfers of money under pretexts like deposits, registration fees, or to unlock subsequent tasks. Victims are promised refunds along with larger commissions. In reality, official affiliate programmes on e-commerce platforms do not charge registration fees. Users can join for free and earn commissions based on transactions generated from product promotions. Several signs of scams to watch out for include: requests for upfront payments, such as deposits or registration fees; promises of unrealistic large profits in a short time; and communication conducted outside official platforms, such as through instant messaging apps or social media. The public is advised not to be easily swayed by implausible offers and not to share personal data like OTP codes with unknown parties. Furthermore, all information regarding affiliate programmes should be verified through official customer service within the app to ensure their authenticity. Improving digital literacy is considered key to preventing the public from falling victim to various evolving online scam tactics amid the growing activity in the digital space.
