Beware of Scam SMS: Check the Difference Between Fake and Real e-Tilang Links

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The police have just announced a new scam method using links that appear to be the official e-Tilang website from the Attorney General’s Office. It turns out that the e-Tilang system has two types, one from the police and one from the Attorney General’s Office.

The difference between the two is that the Polri e-Tilang is for recording traffic violations and paying fines before a court hearing. The official website is at https://etilang.polri.go.id.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s e-Tilang is for handling the payment of fines after the court decision has been made. The website address is https://tilang.kejaksaan.go.id.

For the process, people who commit violations will receive a notification from the Polri e-Tilang. The SMS sent is also not from a personal number but uses the official account. “People will receive a notification in the form of an SMS, this is sent using not a personal number but using the official e-Tilang Polri account. When people receive this SMS from a personal number, it is definitely not true,” explained Randy from the National Traffic Management Centre (Korlantas Polri).

After receiving the notification, people need to confirm it. After that, a traffic ticket will be sent to the address of the vehicle that committed the traffic violation, along with a BRIVA code.

However, if people ignore the notification or do not confirm the ticket, then the process will continue with a court hearing. Only then will the data be sent to the prosecutor’s office.

Regarding this case, where the perpetrators claim to be from the Attorney General’s Office, he emphasised that the Attorney General’s e-Tilang will only be issued if people do not confirm the previous notification. “If people receive an SMS regarding a traffic ticket notification from the prosecutor’s office, it is certain that before receiving the SMS notification from the Attorney General’s Office, they will have already received an SMS notification of the traffic ticket from the official Polri account,” he explained. “Because it is impossible that without a notification from us or enforcement of a violation from the Polri, they will suddenly receive an SMS regarding an electronic ticket from the Attorney General’s Office,” he added.

The police uncovered the e-Tilang scam case after receiving reports through the Attorney General’s Office about 11 phishing links. All of these links are similar to the official website for paying e-tickets belonging to the Indonesian Attorney General’s Office. “The perpetrators spread the fake links through the SMS blast method from these five mobile phone numbers, which will later develop into several mobile phone numbers,” said the Director of Special Cyber Crime Investigation (Dirtipidsiber) of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri), Himawan Bayu Aji, on Wednesday (25/2/2026). A similar case was also found in the Central Sulawesi Police area. The chronology is almost the same, the victim will receive an SMS from an unknown number containing a traffic violation fine and a link. However, when clicked, the link will take the victim to a fake e-Tilang site that looks very similar to the real one. Because they were convinced, the victims will enter their personal data and credit card data, resulting in an illegal debit transaction of 2,200 riyal or Rp 8.8 million. (dem/dem)
