Beware of Job Scams in West Jakarta, Victim Loses Millions of Rupiah

Alleged fraudulent practices under the guise of fake job recruitment have resurfaced in the West Jakarta area, claiming several victims. The perpetrators’ modus operandi involves promising jobs with attractive facilities, but applicants are required to deposit a sum of money before starting work. One victim, Jieyes Mishael Panjaitan (18), claimed to have suffered a loss of Rp2.5 million. The man from Purwakarta initially received information about a warehouse operator vacancy via social media and was invited for an interview session in the Cengkareng area, West Jakarta. During the interview process, Mishael was asked to pay an initial fund under the pretext of Medical Check Up (MCU) costs and work uniforms. ‘After that, my brother-in-law transferred Rp2.5 million. Then it was photographed and a contract letter was made, but I wasn’t allowed to read it, it felt rushed,’ Mishael revealed. Suspicion arose after the payment was completed, but the promised health check and uniform distribution were never carried out. Mishael was instead asked to go home without any certainty of a start date. When he tried to return to the location to seek an explanation, he was blocked by local security officers. Responding to this case, West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah urged the public to be more critical of job vacancy information circulating on social media. She appealed to residents to always confirm with authorised agencies to prevent similar fraud. ‘If it relates to job vacancies, the person concerned should confirm with the Sudin Nakertransgi (Sub-department of Manpower, Transmigration and Energy). They can ask at the sub-district or city level,’ Iin said in Jakarta on Wednesday. Iin has instructed her staff to strengthen the dissemination of information regarding official job fairs organised by the government. According to her, official job fairs are a safe platform for job seekers to obtain real opportunities without the risk of fraud. Regarding the legal aspect, the Mayor fully supports firm action against the perpetrators. She has handed over the handling of this criminal case to the police to provide a deterrent effect and protect the public from bogus recruitment practices.
