Beware of High Waves of Up to 4 Metres in Indonesian Waters from 17-20 May 2026, Check the Affected Areas
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning regarding potential high waves that threaten several areas of Indonesian waters. This phenomenon is predicted to last for four days, from 17 to 20 May 2026.
Based on BMKG analysis, wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia are moving from Northeast to Southeast with a speed of 6-25 knots. Meanwhile, in the southern region, winds move at higher speeds, reaching 6-30 knots. The highest wind speeds were detected in the Karimata Strait, Java Sea, Makassar Strait, Sulawesi Sea, and Maluku Sea.
These wind patterns trigger an increase in wave height at various strategic points for shipping. Here are the details of the areas based on wave height:
BMKG emphasizes that the potential for high waves poses a high risk to maritime safety. The public, especially operators of sea transportation modes, is asked to pay attention to the following risks:
“The potential for high waves in these areas can pose a risk to maritime safety,” said BMKG in an official statement on Sunday (17/5).
