Beware of Fraud via Google Meet: Scammers Impersonate Police, Misuse PMJ-PPATK Logos

A viral post on Threads has highlighted a scam where individuals are asked to join a virtual communication regarding a planned narcotics case raid by investigators from Polda Metro Jaya and the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office (Kejari Jaksel). The police have confirmed this is a fraud. In the viral post, a video conference is seen underway with three other accounts. These three accounts impersonate a Polda Metro Jaya investigator, the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK). Two accounts, purporting to be from Kejari Jaksel and PPATK, used their respective logos. Meanwhile, the account for the Polda Metro Jaya investigator showed the face of a man. The poster expressed confusion and questioned the legitimacy of the procedure for raiding a narcotics case. Responding to this, the Head of Public Relations for the South Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that this is certainly a fraudulent scheme. “Based on the modus operandi reported, the party claiming to be a police officer is a fraudster,” Budi told reporters on Friday (17/7/2026). Budi confirmed that the police never conduct case handling processes via Google Meet. Polda Metro, Budi said, also never requests the banking data of a person involved in a case. “The police do not conduct investigations, arrests, or raids via Google Meet, especially by asking victims to scan QR codes or provide banking data,” Budi explained. Following this incident, Budi urged the public to be more cautious. He also asked the public to report immediately if they experience anything suspicious or feel they have become a victim. “The public is advised not to follow the perpetrator’s instructions and not to provide personal data, OTP codes, PINs, or make money transfers,” Budi said. “For those who feel they are victims, please report immediately to the nearest police station or contact the police service at 110 so that it can be followed up,” he added.
