Bets Placed a Day Before Iran Was Bombed, Six People Net Rp27 Billion
A total of six accounts on Polymarket earned US$1.2 million ( Rp27 billion ) by betting on a US military strike against Iran. Strangely, all six accounts were created just a few hours before the US bombed Iran. According to Bloomberg, the six accounts were created in February. The only activity they had on Polymarket was to bet that United States President Donald Trump would attack Iran. According to analytics firm Bubblemaps SA, the six accounts earned US$1.2 million by betting that the US attack on Iran would occur at the end of February. Similar activity on Polymarket, described as an “investing” platform to guess various events, also occurred when Trump abducted Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela. The news angered US Senator Chris Murphy. “Crazy that this is legal. People around Trump are profiting from war and death. I will soon propose a bill to ban such things,” Murphy said. In addition to the six suspicious accounts, many other Polymarket users bet that Iran would be attacked. The trading volume of contracts on the timing of a US attack on Iran on Polymarket reached US$90 million. Suspicion about people close to Trump is hard to prove because accounts on Polymarket are anonymous so the identities of those betting cannot be known. Kalshi, a platform similar to Polymarket, requires users to verify their identity. This provision allows Kalshi to prevent insider trading. For example, last week Kalshi sanctioned a video editor working for MrBeast for betting on one of the betting events. The US and Israel’s attack on Iran killed Ali Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader. Iran retaliated by launching missiles and drones at US facilities in Middle Eastern countries.
