Bessent: US to Impose Further Sanctions on Banks for Iran Links

Washington (ANTARA) - The United States Department of the Treasury will take firm action against several banking institutions due to their failure to comply with US sanctions imposed on Iran.

“We are likely to announce sanctions against a bank this week, and we will announce another one next week,” stated US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday.

Last week, Bessent outlined “Operation Economic Outcast”, an isolationist campaign targeting the economy by focusing on Iran and its allies.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a letter, urged the leadership of the United Nations (UN) and the organisation’s member states to condemn the efforts of economic pressure and isolation against Iran.

On Friday (28/8), the US Treasury Department severed the access of the UAE branch of Egypt’s Banque Misr from its financial system, following allegations of cooperation with Iran.
