IPB University Rector Alim Setiawan Slamet has confirmed that the institution has issued a one-semester suspension against 16 IPB students in connection with the alleged sexual harassment case in a student group chat. Setiawan stated that the students are also subject to social sanctions. “Yes, the sanctions will subsequently be implemented. So the students must be inactive for one semester first. Then, of course, there are additional measures, such as carrying out social activities and services,” Setiawan said after a meeting with Commission X of the DPR at the DPR RI in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (20/4/2026). In addition, Setiawan said the 16 students will receive education on sexual violence. He hopes that, upon completion of their suspension, they will improve their behaviour. “This includes enhancing their literacy and understanding. The issue might stem from differing knowledge about the spectrum of violence. So, we want that after the suspension, these students can participate more positively. That is the most important thing,” he stated. Setiawan also assured continued support for the victims of the sexual harassment perpetrated by the 16 IPB students. “Oh yes, of course, we provide accompaniment and recovery for the victims, psychological support and so on. From the beginning, in our point of view, whenever there is an incident or report, we stand with the victim. That is the first priority,” he said. Invitation for Victims to Report to Police Setiawan also does not object if the victims wish to report the 16 students to the police. He leaves it to the victims. “If there is a report to the police, we defer it to the victims. The institution carries out its duties and authority in accordance with applicable regulations,” he explained. He also has no issue if the existing evidence is reported to the police. He noted that the institution is only authorised to impose administrative sanctions. “Of course, we leave it to the victims because our authority is limited to administrative matters as per the regulations. I think the most important thing is that we protect the victims, stand with them, and help them recover. That is the priority,” Setiawan said.
