Besides at the DPRD, the 21 April Action is Also Held at the East Kalimantan Governor's Office
Students and various groups from different elements held a joint demonstration on Tuesday (21 April). The 21 April East Kalimantan people’s action took place not only in front of the East Kalimantan DPRD office but also in front of the East Kalimantan Governor’s Office. Quoting from detikKalimantan, the action initially took place in front of the DPRD, then around 2:00 p.m. WITA, the protesters moved to the East Kalimantan Governor’s Office. In their oration in front of the Governor’s Office, the crowd demanded that East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud meet them and even forced him to step down from his position. Similar to in front of the East Kalimantan DPRD, the Governor’s Office was covered with barbed wire barricades. Barbed wire barricades were also installed at the Governor’s official residence. Previously, during the action in front of the East Kalimantan DPRD, the crowd put up a banner containing three demands. The banner was placed on a billboard that previously displayed photos of the East Kalimantan DPRD leaders and greetings for Kartini Day. The content of the three demands of the people’s action was to audit all East Kalimantan provincial government policies, stop KKN practices in East Kalimantan, and urge the East Kalimantan DPRD to immediately take action and fully carry out its oversight function. Meanwhile, at the Governor’s Office and official residence, officers had installed barbed wire since Monday (20 April). The installation drew criticism from the public, particularly expressed by Musthafa, Chairman of the Centre for Research on Human Rights and Tropical Multiculturalism (PusHAM-MT) at Mulawarman University. He stated that such an approach instead gave the impression of being repressive in responding to the expression of opinion. “The installation of barbed wire is excessive and symbolically creates a psychological distance between the government and the people,” Musthafa said in his statement on Monday. Regarding the barbed wire fencing, East Kalimantan Police Chief Inspector General Endar Priantoro asked that it not be exaggerated because it was preventive in nature. He emphasised that the security pattern still prioritised a humane, pre-emptive, and preventive approach. “That is to prevent irresponsible parties. If there is no bad intention, there is no need to make a fuss about it,” Endar said.
