'Berjaya' operation ready for holidays

JAKARTA (JP): The municipal branch of the Agency for the
Coordination of Support for the Development of National Stability
(Bakorstanas) launched an operation Saturday against criminals
and transportation touts as the Idul Fitri holidays and the
Chinese lunar new year near.

The agency's local spokesman, Lt. Col. Didi Supandi, said the
operation, code named Operasi Berjaya is a joint operation
involving the Jakarta Military Command with its current Operasi
Bersih and the City Police with its Operasi Kilat Jaya.

The operation which involves 2,400 motorcycle troops is led by
Col. Edi Budianto of the Army, Didi said.

"The operation will continue until the end of the Idul Fitri
celebration. It will focus on places such as terminals, stations
and markets in Jakarta and its surrounding areas," he said.

Yesterday's operation started from the Blok M shopping center
and its bus terminal area.

Most of the officers only asked the Blok M visitors to show
their ID cards.

One visitor complained about the way an officer asked for his
ID card. "Do I look like a criminal," he said.

A man with long hair who could not show his ID Card, was
ordered to do squat jumps.

After operating Blok M, the operation continued to the Pasar
Senen area. (04)
