Two men distributing Class I narcotics, specifically methamphetamine, have been apprehended by the Narcotics Unit (Satresnarkoba) of Berau Police Station in East Kalimantan on Wednesday, 13 May. Officers also secured 11 packages of methamphetamine ready for distribution.

Head of Narcotics Unit at Berau Police Station, Senior Police Commissioner (AKP) Agus Priyanto, explained on Saturday, 24 May, that the breakthrough originated from public information regarding drug trafficking activities in Karang Ambun District, Tanjung Redeb Subdistrict. Officers successfully apprehended two dealers and seized evidence with a total gross weight reaching 44.22 grams.

“We immediately followed up on the community information with field investigations, which ultimately resulted in the apprehension of the suspects,” he stated.

The first apprehension occurred at approximately 17:00 local time against a male individual with initials AM, aged 22. When apprehended in Karang Ambun District, officers discovered one medium-sized package of Class I methamphetamine weighing 4.72 grams gross.

In addition to methamphetamine, officers also secured one used cigarette packet wrapper and one mobile phone believed to be connected to the criminal offence.

“From the initial interrogation, suspect AM admitted obtaining the illicit substance from someone with initials NAF,” explained AKP Agus Priyanto.

Based on developments from AM’s confession, officers conducted further investigation and successfully apprehended another suspect with initials NAF, aged 18, at a location still within Karang Ambun District.

During a search witnessed by the neighbourhood head and residents, police discovered eight medium-sized packages and two small packages of Class I methamphetamine. Total gross weight of the evidence reached 39.50 grams.

Additionally, other evidence was secured including a digital scale, clip-lock bags, straw pieces, bags, trousers, one motorcycle unit, and one mobile phone.

“Officers also investigated the source of the substance after the suspect admitted obtaining methamphetamine from someone with initials X, who remains under investigation,” he added.

Both suspects and all evidence are now held at Berau Police Station for further investigation and examination.

For their actions, the suspects have been charged under Article 114 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics along with penalty adjustment provisions and Article 609 paragraph (2) letter (a) of the Criminal Code regarding possession and distribution of Class I non-plant narcotics.

AKP Agus Priyanto emphasised that his unit will continue efforts to combat drug trafficking in Berau Police jurisdiction and urged the community to actively provide information to the police. “We appreciate the community’s support in helping resolve drug cases. This synergy is vital to save our young generation from the dangers of drugs,” he concluded.
