The Berau Police narcotics unit (Satresnarkoba) destroyed 372.67 grams of Category 1 narcotics, specifically methamphetamine, on Wednesday morning (19/8), resulting from the uncovering of 11 narcotics cases in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. The destruction took place in the Satresnarkoba presentation room at Berau Police headquarters, led directly by the Head of the Berau Police Narcotics Unit, AKP Agus Priyanto.
The destruction of the evidence was witnessed by representatives of law enforcement agencies and related institutions, including representatives from the Tanjung Redeb District Court, the Berau District Prosecutor’s Office, legal counsel for the suspects, the Berau National Unity and Political Agency (Kesbangpol), as well as internal Berau Police personnel down to the sector police level, and the suspects themselves.
“Today we are carrying out the destruction of narcotics evidence in the form of methamphetamine weighing a total of 372.67 grams, which is the result of uncovering 11 narcotics crime cases within the jurisdiction of the Berau Police,” stated Berau Police Chief AKBP Ridho Tri Putranto through AKP Agus Priyanto, accompanied by Head of Public Relations AKP Suradi.
He explained that the methamphetamine evidence was seized from 11 different cases involving a total of 12 suspects, consisting of 11 men and 1 woman. The cases are currently still undergoing legal proceedings at the Berau Police.
The destruction procession was carried out transparently by dissolving the clear methamphetamine crystals into a container filled with hot water mixed with detergent. Once dissolved and combined, the liquid was then disposed of into a septic tank.
“This activity was witnessed by representatives of law enforcement agencies and related institutions, including the suspects themselves, so that the destruction of the evidence was carried out transparently,” Agus explained.
For their actions, the suspects are charged with multiple articles, namely Article 609 paragraphs (1) and (2) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the new Criminal Code, as well as Article 114 paragraphs (1) and (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
The penalties faced by the perpetrators range from a minimum prison sentence of 4 years to a maximum of the death penalty or life imprisonment, as stipulated in the new Criminal Code and the Narcotics Law.
“The purpose of the destruction is to break the distribution chain so that the seized methamphetamine is completely destroyed and does not return to the black market, to serve as a deterrent by demonstrating that the state acts firmly against drug trafficking networks and dealers, and to save the nation’s future generations,” he concluded.
