Bengkulu's Perut Punai snack secures US$1,500 export contract
A traditional snack from Bengkulu Province, Perut Punai, has secured a contract for 500 packages worth US$1,500 for the South African market.
“UMKM Jaya Rasa secured a contract for 500 pieces of Perut Punai snack worth US$1,500 for the South African market in another business matching session,” said Wahyu Yuwana Hidayat, Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Bengkulu Province, in Bengkulu in August 2026.
The achievement was obtained through the facilitation of an Export Business Matching session at KKI 2026, which is part of efforts to expand export market access for Bengkulu’s small and medium enterprises (UMKM).
Wahyu said the achievement demonstrates that Bengkulu’s UMKM products can be accepted in overseas markets and proves that Bengkulu’s UMKM are worthy of competing and standing alongside other UMKM in Indonesia to go global.
The Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Bengkulu Province encouraged UMKM participation through KKI 2026 with support from the National Crafts Council (Dekranasda) and Dharma Wanita of Bengkulu Province. In the event, 32 UMKM participated in the exhibition online and six UMKM participated in person.
According to UMKM Jaya Rasa, Perut Punai is a snack made of small round pieces, also known as juwada kere or juwada keras. The name Perut Punai is inspired by the punai bird, whose habitat is abundant in Bengkulu Province.
Perut Punai is not a food that uses any part of the punai bird’s body; rather, the snack is made from a combination of rice flour, sugar, slaked lime and salt.
The snack is often found at various celebrations such as weddings, Eid and circumcisions. Perut Punai generally has two flavour variants: original savoury and sweet, with natural palm sugar as the sweetener.
In addition to Perut Punai, UMKM Kopi Bukit Barisan successfully signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Indonesia Specialty Coffee for an order of 500 kilograms of Bengkulu Robusta green beans with an initial contract value of Rp35.5 million.
