Bengkulu City Health Office (Dinkes) in Bengkulu Province will target approximately 7,000 residents to undergo HIV screening and health examinations by 2026 to prevent the spread of the virus that attacks the human immune system.

The Acting Head of Bengkulu City Health Office, Neli Hartati, stated that HIV screening is one of the prevention measures implemented by the government. “Since early 2026, the number of HIV cases in Bengkulu City has reached 13 people,” she said.

By 2026, the Health Office aims for approximately 7,000 people to undergo screening, particularly from key populations at higher risk of transmission. The screening method is conducted through a pick-up service system by health teams accompanied by Bengkulu City Civil Police Units (Satpol PP).

Teams are deployed directly to various locations, including the Mega Mall Pasar Minggu area, boarding houses, and entertainment venues across Bengkulu City. “So far, from screening results, some have tested positive but the Health Office immediately provides immediate treatment,” Hartati added.

During screening operations, health teams often encounter obstacles, notably information leaks regarding screening schedules or raids. When officers arrive, some target individuals are no longer at the location because information about the activity has already spread, creating a challenge for the team.

Nevertheless, the Health Office remains committed to implementing the programme continuously to reduce transmission rates in the region. The Health Office will also strengthen reproductive health education, conduct regular HIV screening, and provide social support for vulnerable groups.
