Bengkulu Law Ministry Proactively Protects Trademarks and Promotes Royalty Compliance

Bengkulu (ANTARA) - The Regional Office of the Ministry of Law (Kemenkum) in Bengkulu is conducting proactive intellectual property service outreach as an effort to protect trademarks while encouraging compliance with music and song royalty payments by business operators in Bengkulu City. “This step is to improve the quality of post-intellectual property application services through active assistance to trademark rights holders as well as strengthening cross-sector synergy regarding music royalty payment compliance,” said Nova Harneli, Head of the Intellectual Property Services Division at the Kemenkum Regional Office in Bengkulu, on Wednesday. The activity is part of the 2026 Quarter II Action Plan for Intellectual Property Services, which aims to improve service quality. The Kemenkum Regional Office in Bengkulu also delivered a Letter of Appeal for the Extension of the Trademark Protection Period while coordinating with a number of regional government agencies to improve compliance with music and or song royalty payments. “Trademark extension is not merely an administrative obligation, but an effort to maintain the economic value and legal certainty of a brand that has been built. Therefore, we are present directly to remind and provide closer service to the public,” she said. During the activity, the Intellectual Property Services Division team visited several trademark rights holders whose protection periods were set to expire, including the holders of the trademarks “NIXON”, “MARIE 18 CLINIC”, “MARIE 18 + LOGO”, and “BATIK BESUREK LIMURA BENGKULU + LOGO”. In addition to delivering the appeal letters, the team also coordinated with the Bengkulu City Trade and Industry Office, the Bengkulu City Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Office, the Bengkulu City Health Office, and the Bengkulu Province Youth and Sports Office. This coordination was carried out to obtain initial information regarding business operators who use music and or songs commercially in their business activities. From the coordination results, she said information was obtained regarding the potential of business operators within the scope of coaching by each agency, such as karaoke businesses, restaurants, cafes, hotels, beauty clinics, spas, fitness centres, and radio broadcasting institutions that potentially use music and songs for commercial purposes. In carrying out the activity, the team also encountered several obstacles in the field, including addresses of trademark rights holders that were no longer accurate due to relocation of business premises or domicile. Additionally, data in the trademark information system is not yet fully equipped with contact information such as telephone numbers, WhatsApp numbers, or email addresses, so the delivery of information still relies heavily on direct visits. Through this effort, the Bengkulu Regional Office of the Ministry of Law affirmed its commitment to providing intellectual property services that are more proactive, adaptive, and oriented towards the needs of the community.
