Bengkulu doctor's career blighted

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: A general practitioner here has been
prevented from pursuing specialist studies in anesthesia
following the prosecution of a local anesthetist for negligence
that claimed patients' lives.

Head of the provincial health office Sabri Magrib said on
Saturday the Association of Indonesian Anesthetists (IDSAI) had
released a circular to all hospitals across the country not to
grant access to Bengkulu doctors who wished to follow anesthesia
studies, due to the case.

The district court here recently found anesthetist Dodi S.
Adipraja guilty and sentenced him to a suspended three months in
jail with one month's probation, for causing the death of two
patients who underwent surgery at M. Yunus General Hospital in
Bengkulu last year.

Sabri lashed out at the move, saying it was a human rights
violation.

He said his office and overseas institutions had raised Rp 100
million to sponsor Zulkimaulud Ritonga so that he could take the
specialist studies. -- Antara
