Bengkulu City Residents Required to Stand for 'Indonesia Raya' to Foster Religiosity

The Bengkulu City Government has taken a bold step in strengthening national character by officially launching a movement to simultaneously sing the national anthem ‘Indonesia Raya’ and the Bengkulu City March. This policy targets all levels of society, from civil servants to citizens in public spaces.

Mayor Dedy Wahyudi emphasised that this policy is not merely ceremonial but an effort to create a new culture. “It is hoped this will become a new culture in Bengkulu City to realise a more advanced, religious, happy, and sustainable society with a deep love for the homeland,” Dedy stated in Bengkulu on Monday (14/7/2026).

The policy is formally outlined in Bengkulu Mayor Circular Letter Number 17 of 2026. Under this regulation, the routine activity is scheduled to take place twice a week. The primary objective of the circular is to strengthen nationalism, enhance national unity and integrity, and foster a spirit of patriotism within a heterogeneous society.

When the clock strikes 10:00 AM WIB on the designated days, all members of the public are required to stand and observe the anthem. To ensure the policy is effective and not merely a written appeal, the City Government has distributed specific tasks to various agencies. A unique aspect of the policy is the obligation to play the Bengkulu City March immediately after ‘Indonesia Raya’ concludes, aiming to balance national pride with local identity. The city administration believes that a religious and happy society begins with a strong sense of national identity.

The Transportation Agency has also received special instructions to utilise the Area Traffic Control System (ATCS) technology. The anthem will be broadcast at major intersections when traffic lights are red, provided that traffic conditions are safe and allow motorists to observe a moment of solemnity without disrupting safety.
