BEM UBK and Student Alliance Mediate with Gibran
The Bung Karno University Student Executive Board (BEM UBK) accepted a mediation invitation from Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Today, 15 June 2026, BEM UBK and a student alliance from Jakarta and surrounding areas held a demonstration titled ‘Tata Ulang Indonesia’ on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta.
Based on Tempo’s observation at the location, around 15 student representatives fulfilled Gibran’s invitation. They entered the Vice Presidential Palace on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan at approximately 5:25 PM WIB.
‘We will emphasise the importance of the substance of government programmes in relation to people’s lives,’ said M. Aldi Maludin, Chair of BEM UBK’s Faculty of Law, who was one of the representatives.
In front of Gibran, he said, the students would convey all the demands brought today, for example, the cessation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) project and the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives.
This is because, according to him, the flagship project of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration is being run with chaotic governance, hastily, and with minimal strategic review.
One clear example of the MBG project’s mismanagement is the revelation of a corruption case involving the leadership of the National Nutrition Agency. ‘We do not want any oligarchy within the policies implemented by the government, especially those that make the people suffer,’ he said.
During today’s demonstration, BEM UBK and the student alliance brought six demands for President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.
The six demands include temporarily suspending and evaluating the free nutritious meal project and the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives; reviewing the National Police Law; stopping militarism and upholding civilian supremacy;
Furthermore, urging the government to take strategic steps to maintain the stability of the rupiah exchange rate and national economic resilience; demanding the government provide inclusive, quality, and affordable education rights for all Indonesian people; and reviewing the increase in fuel prices because it burdens the public.
As of the publication of this report, the closed-door mediation between Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and the student representatives was still ongoing.
