Belgium condemns US sanctions against the ICC
Brussels (ANTARA) – Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot on Friday (9 October) condemned US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“I strongly condemn the new US sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC). Attempts to cripple the court’s work prevent victims from obtaining justice and allow those responsible for the gravest crimes to escape accountability,” Maxime said on the X platform.
He said that, at Belgium’s initiative, support for the ICC would be discussed with fellow EU foreign ministers and at the forthcoming meeting of the European Council.
“We will call for tangible protection. The court’s independence must not depend on who is under investigation,” the foreign minister stressed.
He further called for the “activation of the EU Blocking Statute to protect the court and those supporting its work”.
Maxime also emphasised that the EU must “defend our right to uphold international law without foreign sanctions dictating our choices”.
