A wedding in Bekasi, West Java, meant to be a celebration of joy turned into a heartbreaking story after the couple became victims of a scam by their wedding organiser (WO). The incident went viral after being posted on social media platform Threads. The would-be bride and groom were unable to hold their wedding in Bekasi as promised. The post, which included photo and video links, showed the wedding venue in an empty, desolate state. The reception hall, typically adorned with buffet tents, elegant decorations, and a wedding altar, appeared completely bare. Several people were seen crying inside the room. East Jakarta Metropolitan Police have urged victims of the alleged WO scam to file official reports. ‘Please file a report; the couple in the video are scheduled to do so today, and the WO’s office is in Cakung,’ said East Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Crime Investigation Unit Chief Bayu Kurniawan during a statement in Jakarta on Sunday (24 May). Bayu stated that the police are ready to accept reports from the affected couples or any other parties who feel they have been defrauded. According to Bayu, the alleged scammer’s warehouse or office is located in Cakung District, East Jakarta. Thus, the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police will handle any official complaints submitted for legal action. Bayu also confirmed that on Saturday (23 May), a resident visited the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police to consult regarding the suspected WO scam. However, police are still awaiting confirmation of the legal status of those who reported the incident. ‘The person who came yesterday had a wedding that did not proceed as per the agreed schedule. It is still unclear whether the event will take place. We cannot yet label them as victims,’ Bayu explained. The case came to light after a post on Threads by user @meislvy went viral, drawing public attention. The post claimed that their cousin was a victim of a suspected WO scam in Bekasi. The uploaded video showed a reception far from the couple’s expectations. The wedding venue appeared completely undecorated, unlike typical wedding halls. Additionally, the catering services promised by the WO were not provided at the venue. In the midst of this, the couple’s family and relatives were seen trying to serve guests with simple snacks and mineral water. The emotional scene was widely shared on social media. The post also highlighted the MC, who remained present despite not having been paid by the WO. ‘You can see how this morning’s supposed joyful event turned into tears. FYI, the MC in the middle photo is really kind—he was also scammed by Marwah but still showed up without payment,’ the post stated. As of now, the exact number of victims and total losses from the alleged scam remain unknown. Police are still awaiting official reports from affected parties to further investigate the case. East Jakarta Metropolitan Police have urged the public to exercise caution when selecting wedding organisers, including verifying the legitimacy and track record of service providers before making large payments.
