Bekasi Residents Urge West Java Provincial Government to Immediately Repair KH Ma'mun Nawawi Road
Bekasi Regency — Residents of Bekasi Regency are urging the West Java Provincial Government to immediately repair KH Ma'mun Nawawi Road, one of the main strategic routes that is now in severe disrepair and causing congestion along one of the busiest stretches in the area.
The provincial road, which serves as the primary link between Bekasi Regency and Bogor and falls under the authority of the West Java Provincial Government, has suffered damage for years without comprehensive repair. Congestion has become a daily occurrence along this route connecting residential areas and industrial centres in the southern part of Bekasi Regency.
Ika (28), a private sector employee who traverses the road daily, expressed her anxiety and concern over the worsening conditions.
"I travel along KH Ma'mun Nawawi Road every day. It used to be called Cikarang-Cibarusah Road. It was already damaged under the old name, and after the name change it's become even worse. The government seems to be turning a blind eye to our complaints," she said in Cikarang on Wednesday.
Similar complaints were voiced by Rahmat (35), another motorist who frequently uses the route. He described the road conditions in this Jakarta satellite area as deplorable.
Based on field observations, damage has occurred at multiple points. In Kampung Pasirkonci, Pasirsari Village, South Cikarang Sub-district, just beyond the descent from the Pasirkonci flyover, the road surface is damaged across almost its entire width. The concrete layer has peeled away, leaving exposed earth mixed with sand. In hot weather, dust clouds fill the air, whilst during rain, the potholes become waterlogged and resemble ponds.
Damage was also found at the roundabout beneath the Tegal Gede flyover, also in Pasirsari Village. The road concrete has split open, leaving fairly deep holes. During peak hours, this spot becomes a source of congestion as motorists are forced to slow down. Conditions become even more dangerous at night due to inadequate street lighting.
Another damage point is located near the Kampung Randu three-way junction in Sukasari Village, Serangbaru Sub-district. According to Ikbal (37), the stretch can be considered extremely dangerous, as three accidents occurred at the same spot in October last year.
KH Ma'mun Nawawi Road, which stretches for 26 kilometres, is a vital route used daily by thousands of vehicles, ranging from industrial workers' vehicles to heavy-tonnage lorries.
In 2023, a section in the South Cikarang area was widened over a 2.3-kilometre stretch. However, no significant follow-up action has been taken since, and the lack of maintenance has caused the road condition to deteriorate further.
South Cikarang Sub-district Head Muhammad Said acknowledged the numerous public complaints regarding the road damage. However, he noted that repairs have been hampered by administrative jurisdictional issues, as the stretch falls under the responsibility of the West Java Provincial Government.
"We have received numerous complaints. So far, conditions have worsened and there have been no concrete repair measures from the West Java Provincial Government," he said.
Acting Bekasi Regent Asep Surya Atmaja stated that his administration would coordinate with the West Java Provincial Government to ensure repairs are carried out promptly, so that residents can go about their daily activities more safely and comfortably, without being haunted by the risk of accidents caused by potholed roads.
