Bekasi Residents to Get Extension Station, What Is Its Function?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Bekasi residents are set to have a new facility connected to Bekasi Station. The facility, named Bekasi Extension Station, is being built as part of the development of a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) area together with Summarecon Bekasi.

Unlike an entirely new station, Bekasi Extension Station is a development of the existing Bekasi Station area. The project covers the construction of a station extension and a connecting skybridge to ease passenger access in and out while reducing congestion at the existing station.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said transit-based area development such as that in Bekasi is expected to serve as an example for other cities in Indonesia.

“TOD, or transit-based urban area development like what is being built here, can become a model for other cities in Indonesia,” said AHY on Friday (24/7/2026).

The TOD concept being developed not only provides access to trains but also integrates residential areas, community activity centres and public transport within a single district. The government believes this integration can cut travel times while improving the quality of life for urban communities.

“But I think Summarecon also needs support from the government through regulation and tight coordination between the parties, because the priority is actually to determine land use and spatial planning first. Then we must ensure the land is in good condition, with no problems whatsoever, because once land status becomes an issue, if it is not clear and clean it could cause problems later on,” said AHY.

Summarecon President Director Adrianto P. Adhi said the construction of Bekasi Extension Station is targeted for completion within 18 months. The company is preparing an investment of around Rp80 billion to build the extension station along with the skybridge connecting it to Bekasi Station.

“Yes, we will build this extension station in 18 months and we will utilise an investment of around Rp80 billion. The land area is about 7,000 square metres and the building area is about 6,000,” said Adrianto.

The extension station will not replace the function of the existing Bekasi Station. Passengers will still board and alight from trains via the existing platforms, whilst the extension station will serve as a new entrance connected by the skybridge. The area is also being prepared for integration with public transport, including planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), giving residents more transport options.

“So this extension station is being built without reducing the function of the existing station. People will later walk via the skybridge to the existing station to catch trains. If trains stopped here, it would change the entire signalling system. That is why we chose the extension concept so it remains safe and functions to capture passengers from the Summarecon area and its surroundings,” said Adrianto.
