Bekasi Regency Government to Cover Medical Expenses for Gas Explosion Victims in Mekarmukti
The Bekasi Regency Government has ensured that it will bear all medical treatment costs for the victims of an incident involving an explosion, suspected to be caused by an LPG gas leak, in Mekarmukti Village.
In addition to hospital expenses, the local government is also distributing material assistance to alleviate the daily living burdens of the victims’ families. This was stated by the Acting Regent of Bekasi, Asep Surya Atmaja, during a visit to the house of mourning in Kampung Pulo Kapuk, Mekarmukti Village, North Cikarang, on Monday (31/8). The visit was conducted as a gesture of care and deep condolences for the tragedy that befell the family.
“I specifically visited the house of mourning. We believe that Bekasi Regency shares the grief over the death of two of our residents and also for the victims who are still undergoing treatment,” said Asep Surya Atmaja on Wednesday (2/9).
During the visit, the Acting Regent was accompanied by the Head of the Social Affairs Office, representatives from Baznas, and local government officials. Asep stated that four family members are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment in several different hospitals.
Specifically, two victims are being treated at Hasan Sadinah Hospital (RSHS) Bandung, one at the Bekasi Regency Regional Hospital (RSUD), and another at Sentra Medika Hospital. “For all treatment costs, God willing, we will cover them,” he asserted.
Alongside the guarantee of medical expenses, the Bekasi Regency Government, together with Baznas, is providing financial support for family members tasked with guarding the victims in hospitals, particularly those in Bandung. Baznas has handed over cash assistance amounting to Rp15 million as well as basic food supplies.
“Baznas has also handed over some funds for travel and food expenses, so that those waiting in Bandung have provisions while their family members are being treated,” Asep added.
Responding to this tragic incident, Asep emphasised the importance of massive socialisation regarding emergency steps during an LPG gas leak, particularly involving three-kilogram cylinders. He requested his staff to provide public understanding regarding the first steps to take when smelling gas.
“There must be socialisation so that the community understands how to face emergency conditions caused by gas leaks. We will work together, if possible, down to the RT/RW (neighbourhood) level. We will provide socialisation regarding handling procedures to ensure this does not happen again,” he said.
He also reminded residents not to panic and to understand self-protection measures. According to him, gas leak incidents are dangerous not only due to the risk of fire but also due to gas exposure, which can cause severe dehydration and life-threatening respiratory disturbances.
It is hoped that with education reaching the grassroots level, the community will possess the basic knowledge required for initial handling to prevent loss of life in the future.
