Bekasi Officially Develops Rp3 Trillion Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) Project

Bekasi City has officially begun development of a Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility with an investment value of approximately Rp3 trillion. The facility will be capable of processing 500,000 tonnes of waste into energy per year, equivalent to 70% of the waste generated in Bekasi City.

Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of BPI Danantara, Pandu Sjahrir, stated that the inauguration is a continuation of a project first launched in Denpasar, Bali. The PSEL is expected to deliver tangible impacts on waste management, green energy, and local economic empowerment, with reference to the European Industrial Emissions Directive environmental standards.

The facility is targeted to reduce landfill emissions by up to 80% and cut carbon emissions by 640,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. “From an energy perspective, this initiative will produce green energy capable of supplying the needs of 55,000 households in Bekasi City,” Pandu said during the groundbreaking ceremony in Bekasi City on Wednesday (26/8/2026).

In his presentation, Pandu explained that the Rp3 trillion PSEL project is estimated to create around 1,000 green jobs and reduce landfill land requirements by approximately 90%. “The waste problem is not an issue experienced by only one region or one person. The waste problem is a shared problem for all of us,” he said.
