Bekasi man arrested for love affair murder

JAKARTA (JP): Bekasi police have arrested a 37-year-old man believed to have murdered an employee of a subdistrict administration office in Central Jakarta, who was having an illicit love affair with his married sister.

Unemployed Sukandi Sutiadi stabbed Rachmat Widodo, 25, after a heated argument at the victim's house at the Permata Garden housing complex, Blok C No. 17, Kali Abang Tengah, North Bekasi around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said that Rachmat suffered three severe wounds in his abdomen and another in his back. He died at the nearby hospital at 2 a.m. yesterday.

Sukandi, now detained at the Bekasi police precinct, is believed to have used a pocket knife, which he bought especially for the murder.

Accompanied by Alexander, his sister's husband, Sukandi is suspected to have gone to the victim's house to meet Sumiati, 35.

Alexander and Sumiati, who has not returned home since the incident, have three children.

During police questioning, Sukandi said that Rachmat had been warned many times by his family and Alexander to stop his love affair with Sumiati.

The story

On Sunday evening, Alexander returned to an empty house and asked his brother-in-law, Sukandi, to help him look for his wife at the house of a relative.

At around 10 p.m. Alexander sped on his scooter to Rachmat's house in Bekasi to check whether Sumiati was there.

Before getting into the house, Alexander met and asked several people near the house. They told him that only Rachmat was home.

Sukandi then knocked on the door. The unsuspecting Rachmat, who had met Sukandi many times before, asked his guest to come inside. Sukandi, however, scolded Rachmat, used abusive language and warned him not to see Sumiati again.

Sukandi then took his knife from his jacket and stabbed Rachmat four times.

Hearing the noise, dozens of people came to the scene and managed to overpower the suspect. They rushed the victim quickly to the nearby Bekasi hospital.

Police said that Rachmat's body has been sent to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for an autopsy. (bsr)
