Bekasi Fire Service Persuades Teenager to Descend from 20-Metre GSM Tower: "Your Journey is Far from Over"
Bekasi — A dramatic rescue operation unfolded when a 15-year-old boy, MRH, a resident of Jatirasa subdistrict in Jatiasih district, Bekasi city, recklessly climbed a GSM tower approximately 20 metres high.
The rescue operation was conducted by the rescue team from the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Service on Saturday, 14 March 2026, in the early morning hours.
Rescue personnel had to scale the tower under limited lighting conditions and with a structure that was reportedly not particularly stable.
Hendrick, Commander of Rescue Company A at the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Service, said his team attempted to persuade the teenager with a persuasive approach to come down from the tower.
“I gave him some motivation. ‘You’re still young. Think about your parents, your journey is still far from over,’” Hendrick said when confirmed by Kompas.com on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
He said he embraced and continuously reassured the victim to prevent him from making any decision that could endanger himself.
“Then I hugged him whilst reassuring him. ‘Come on, don’t feel ashamed in front of your friends later, every human has shortcomings and mistakes. You believe, right?’” Hendrick said.
Hendrick suggested that this act was possibly triggered by romantic troubles experienced by the victim.
“Yes, romantic issues. At that age, it’s what they call puppy love,” he said.
However, he believed that the issue was likely also influenced by the victim’s psychological condition and pressure from his surrounding environment.
“But mixed with romantic troubles, there’s definitely a psychological factor as well, pressure from parents or the environment,” Hendrick said.
He also reminded the family and surrounding residents not to turn the incident into mockery or bullying towards the victim.
“I gave guidance to the victim, his parents, and neighbours to support each other and not make it a subject of ridicule,” he said.
