Bekasi-Cikarang Double-Track Railway to Begin in 2027, Completion in 2029
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Menteri Perhubungan (Minister of Transportation) Dudy Purwagandhi spoke about plans for the double-track line (double-double track, DDT) on the Bekasi-Cikarang route, which will be prioritised following the recent collision involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and the KRL Commuter Line on the Kampung Bandan–Cikarang line at Bekasi Timur Station on 27 April. Dudy said the Bekasi-Cikarang DDT will start in 2027, in accordance with the National Railway Strategic Plan (Renstra Perkeretaetian Nasional) 2027-2029. ‘The Bekasi-Cikarang DDT can begin in 2027, in line with the Renstra Perkeretaapian Nasional 2027-2029, and is expected to be completed by 2029,’ he told reporters on Thursday, 21 May 2026.
Regarding the budget for the DDT, he could not specify yet, but it remains within the Renstra. ‘The budget has been included in the Renstra; we will of course request it for 2027-2029,’ he explained.
Previously, Dudy said the Bekasi-Cikarang DDT project would be prioritised as part of evaluating the railway accident at Bekasi Timur Station. ‘This is, of course, part of our evaluation for the double-track,’ Dudy said at Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
He added that the Bekasi-Cikarang DDT project will be a joint programme with electrification up to Cikampek. ‘This also relates to electrification; it is part of our evaluation of KAI services, especially the KRL,’ he explained.
Currently, the only DDT line in operation is the Jatinegara-Bekasi segment. The project originally extends from Manggarai to Cikarang. Work on the Manggarai–Jatinegara DDT is still ongoing, with the Manggarai Ultimate project being resumed.
Unfortunately, the Bekasi-Cikarang DDT has not yet begun, leaving Bekasi-Cikarang travel very congested as long-distance trains (KAJJ) and the KRL still share the same line, sustaining high risk. On the Jatinegara-Bekasi DDT, KAJJ and KRL operations are already separated, reducing risk. However, beyond Bekasi Station, the KAJJ and KRL lines converge again towards Cikarang.
The Jatinegara-Bekasi DDT has already been implemented gradually, with Jatinegara-Cakung officially operating since 12 April 2019 and the Jatinegara-Cakung-Bekasi DDT operating since 17 December 2022.
