Beijing’s Great Wall Museum reopens after renovation
Beijing (ANTARA) – The Great Wall Museum of China, located at the foot of the famous Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing, reopened to the public on Saturday (24 October) after a comprehensive renovation and upgrade.
The museum is in Yanqing District, on the outskirts of Beijing. It first opened in 1994 and closed in April 2022 for redevelopment.
Construction began in December 2023, with the building designed to blend more closely with the surrounding mountains and vegetation.
The museum has a floor area of 16,000 square metres and includes exhibition spaces, education and public service areas, collection storage facilities and research rooms.
Its permanent and special thematic exhibitions explore the history and culture of the Great Wall. The permanent exhibition features more than 700 cultural relics, including many items on loan from museums across China.
The displays trace efforts to build the Great Wall over more than 2,000 years and show how preservation methods have developed, from emergency protection to systematic conservation.
Visitors can also gain a deeper understanding of the Great Wall’s historical role. In addition to serving as a military defence structure, it gradually became a place of exchange and integration among ethnic groups in China.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Wall stretches for more than 20,000 kilometres across 15 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. Beijing has about 520 kilometres of the wall, and Badaling is its most visited section.
