Behind the Name: Is There a Religious Mission Behind the 'Yakuza Maneges'?

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KEDIRI — The name “Yakuza” has long been associated with Japanese criminal organisations. However, in the city of Kediri, the name is being used for a religious movement and social transformation initiative. An organisation called Yakuza Maneges was officially declared on 9 May 2026 at the Bukit Daun Hotel, Semen District, Kediri Regency.

This organisation was initiated by Gus Thuba Topo Broto Maneges, the grandson of the charismatic cleric KH Hamim Thohari Djazuli (Gus Miek). Unlike the global image of the Yakuza, Yakuza Maneges claims to be a platform for guiding marginalised communities, former criminals, and groups often referred to as “left-wing students,” helping them find a new path in life through religious guidance and humanitarian efforts.

In its declaration, Yakuza Maneges stated that it is not a criminal group, but rather a social organisation with a restorative justice approach. The presence of several local government officials at the event also attracted public attention.

The presence of government and law enforcement officials is seen as a message that Yakuza Maneges wants to be positioned as a social partner of the government, rather than just a fringe movement.

The central figure behind this organisation is Gus Thuba. He is the son of Kiai Tijani Robert Saifunnawas, or Gus Robert, and Ning Nida Duturiah, the daughter of KH Ahmad Shiddiq.

From this lineage, Gus Thuba inherits the tradition of great NU clerics as well as the inclusive religious approach of Gus Miek, who was known for embracing everyone regardless of their background.

In his daily life, Gus Thuba actively continues the tradition of the Semaan Alquran and Dzikrul Ghofilin Moloekatan assemblies. His simple, straightforward, and youth-friendly style of religious guidance has earned him a growing base of followers in Kediri and its surroundings.
