Behind the Great Support, Herdman Reveals the Real Challenges of the Indonesian National Team

Indonesian national team coach, John Herdman, believes the significant strengths of the Red and White squad can serve as both an advantage and a serious challenge. Herdman was officially appointed as the head coach of the Indonesian national team on 13 January 2026. Since then, he has begun to explore the team’s potential, not only from a technical perspective but also the non-technical factors that accompany it.

“We have a developing talent base. You can see the improving quality of the players, plus we have a federation president like Erick Thohir, who is visionary and truly wants to take his country to the next level,” said Herdman.

The British coach stated that the structural support and football atmosphere in Indonesia are assets rarely found in other countries. “You really need a visionary figure. Beneath that, there’s an extraordinary spirit from the supporters. It’s as if there’s no opponent, with the wind at your back,” he explained.

However, behind this substantial support, Herdman also sees another dangerous side. The former Canada national team coach noted that high expectations could turn into pressure. “It can be a blessing and a curse. A curse because the expectations are so great, and we have to be able to meet them,” said Herdman.

Nevertheless, Herdman remains optimistic about elevating the Indonesian national team and competing on the global stage. “We are on the brink of building a nation’s confidence and respect. After that, realistic hopes of qualifying for the World Cup can be established. That is the mission over the next four years,” he emphasised.

Herdman has signed a two-year contract with the Indonesian national team, from 2026 to 2028, with an option to extend until 2030. Major challenges await, in line with the high public expectations for the future of the Red and White team.
