Behind Andrie Yunus's Wounds: Forgiving While Awaiting Justice

Amidst the wounds still being treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), activist Andrie Yunus instead delivered an unusual message. He chose to forgive, even the perpetrators who doused him with acid. That message was conveyed to fellow activists who visited him. “Andrie Yunus keeps reminding us not to forget to forgive the perpetrators for humanitarian reasons,” said the Head of the Impunity Monitoring Division of KontraS, Jane Rosalina, on Wednesday (1/4/2026). “But it must still be voiced and demanded for their full accountability, both the field actors and the intellectual ones,” she continued. Fellow activists chose not to discuss legal developments during their visit to Andrie. They tried to keep the atmosphere light. “We just shared funny and enjoyable things for Andrie’s healing and recovery,” Jane said. The Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, also recounted the moment he visited. “He just glanced at me without saying anything,” he added. Usman admitted that he had previously reminded Andrie to be careful. “Since the Andrie Yunus incident approaching the TNI Bill working committee (Panja) meeting at the Fairmont Hotel in 2025, many parties were unhappy,” he said. The acid dousing incident occurred on Thursday night (12/3/2026).
