Beggars on the increase

Beggars on the increase

From Warta Kota

The number of beggars in Jakarta during the holy month of Ramadhan, especially nearing Idul Fitri, is on the rise as can be seen from the large numbers gathered at traffic lights, shopping malls and residential areas.

In the residential areas they really cause headaches, because almost every hour a different beggar knocks on the door. Most annoying is the fact that many among them are physically fit and yet do not feel embarrassed to beg. This category "operates" on Saturdays and Sundays.

One of the healthy looking beggars was even strong enough to carry a large sack of rice. I refused to give him any money, as I considered him fit enough to work. I told him to report to the chief of our neighborhood unit.

To avoid any inconveniences, I urge others to be careful when refusing to give money to this type of beggar. It is better to ask them to report to the chief of the neighborhood unit, just like I did. This is effective because normally they are unwilling to do so.
