Beggars and squatters nabbed

JAKARTA (JP): Over 200 beggars and squatters were swept off the main streets of West and South Jakarta in a public order operation that ended yesterday.

The operation in South Jakarta, headed by Ramal P. and Akmal Ahmad, has also removed about 120 beggars from the area. One hundred beggars were also relocated in a similar operation in West Jakarta, headed by J.P. Manihuruk .

Antara reported that many of the beggars, with leprosy, were sent to Sitanala Leprosy Hospital in Tangerang, West Java.

Manihuruk said the office had sent the other beggars and squatters to a social rehabilitation center in Kedoya, West Jakarta..

Akmal Ahmad urged Jakartans not to give anything to beggars that operate from door to door. (yns)
