Begasing: The Traditional Game of Kutai as a Medium for Character Education

However, one game that remains relevant and continues to develop is begasing, a traditional spinning top game from Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. This game is not merely traditional entertainment with nostalgic value, but rather a broad educational medium with profound philosophical values that are relevant for shaping children’s character in the modern era.
The historical traces of begasing possess extraordinary philosophy. The game can be traced back to the era of the Mulawarman Kingdom between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, making it one of the oldest games in the archipelago. In its early development period, begasing served as entertainment for the general public and royal members within the palace environment. A significant transformation occurred when Islam developed in Kutai Kartanegara. The process of acculturation with Malay traders who brought similar traditions changed begasing from a casual pastime into a structured and prestigious competitive event. Official recognition of the historical and philosophical value of begasing is reflected in its designation as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB). This status places the game of begasing as a cultural identity that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
From a visual and structural perspective, begasing displays a diversity that reflects deep traditional knowledge. The game equipment is generally made from selected wood with particular attention to perfect rotational balance. There are six main variations in begasing design, namely Palele, Pendada, Buong, Tungkul, Bengor, and Perangat. Each variation has unique visual characteristics, ranging from shapes resembling flat discs and tiered cones to oval forms. This diversity of shapes is not a product of mere chance, but rather the result of the transmission of traditional knowledge tested over centuries.
The educational value contained in the game of begasing extends far beyond mere recreational aspects. In terms of motor skills, this game trains fine motor skills and precise hand-eye coordination. Cognitively, children develop concentration, patience, and strategic thinking abilities—especially when they strive to find the optimal technique to maintain the spinning top’s rotation.
