Before Travelling Home, Check the Regulations for Eid Holiday Ferry Crossings at These Ports
The Indonesian Ministry of Transport (Kemenhub) has jointly issued regulations with the National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) and the Ministry of Public Works (PU) governing passenger and cargo crossings during the 2026 Eid holiday travel period. These regulations apply specifically to the ferry crossing ports of Merak, Bakauheni, Ketapang, Gilimanuk, Jangkar, Padang Bai, and Lembar.
The Director General of Land Transport at Kemenhub, Aan Suhanan, stated that the crossing regulations have been formalised in Joint Ministerial Decision (SKB) numbers KP-DRJD 854 of 2026, HK.201/1/21DJPL/2026, 20/KPTS/Db/2026, and Kep/43/II/2026, dated 5 February 2026, concerning traffic and crossing regulations during the 2026 Eid holiday travel and return periods (1447 Hijriah). The decision covers multiple ports including Merak, Bakauheni, Ciwandan, BBJ Bojonegara (Serang, Banten), BBJ Muara Pilu (Lampung Selatan), PT Wijaya Karya Beton Tbk port (Bakauheni), PT Krakatau Bandar Samudera port (Cilegon), Panjang port (Lampung), and PT Sumur Makmur Abadi (SMA) port.
The following regulations apply:
Pre-Eid travel period (11 March 2026, 15:00 to 13 March 2026, 12:00 local time) – routes to Sumatra:
Pedestrians, bicycles (Class I), and motor vehicles (Classes II, III, IVa, IVb, Va, and VIa) must use Merak Ferry Port (Merak-Bakauheni route)
Heavy cargo vehicles (Classes Vb, VIb, and VII) must use Ciwandan Port (Ciwandan-Wika Beton and/or Ciwandan-Bakauheni routes)
Heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VIII and IX) may use BBJ Bojonegoro Port (Bojonegoro-Muara Pilu route)
Heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VIII and IX) bound for Lampung may also use the sea route via PT Krakatau Bandar Samudera port (Cilegon) to Panjang port (Lampung)
Pre-Eid travel period – routes to Java:
Pedestrians, bicycles (Class I), motor vehicles (Classes II, III, IVa, Va, VIa), and light cargo vehicles (Class IVb) must use Bakauheni Ferry Port (Bakauheni-Merak route)
Heavy cargo vehicles (Classes Vb, VIb, VII, VIII, and IX) must use BBJ Muara Pilu port (Muara Pilu-Bojonegara route)
Heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VIII and IX) bound for Banten may also use the sea route via Panjang port (Lampung) to PT Krakatau Bandar Samudera port (Cilegon)
Main Eid travel period (13 March 2026, 12:00 to 20 March 2026, 15:00 local time):
Pedestrians, motor vehicles (Classes IVa, Va, VIa), and light cargo vehicles (Class IVb) may use Merak Ferry Port (Merak-Bakauheni route)
Bicycles (Class I), motor vehicles (Classes II and III), and two-axle cargo vehicles (Classes Vb and VIb) bound for Sumatra must use Ciwandan port (Ciwandan-Wika Beton and/or Ciwandan-Bakauheni routes)
Three-axle cargo vehicles (Class VIb), cargo vehicles (Classes VII, VIII, and IX) exempt from freight transport restrictions may use BBJ Bojonegara port (Bojonegara-Muara Pilu route)
Three-axle cargo vehicles (Class VIb) and heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VII, VIII, and IX) subject to freight transport restrictions will be directed to buffer zones at BBJ Bojonegaro until restrictions end
Return travel period (23 March 2026, 00:00 to 29 March 2026, 24:00 local time) – routes to Sumatra:
Pedestrians, bicycles, motor vehicles (Classes II, III, IVa, Va, VIa), and light cargo vehicles (Classes IVb, Vb) and two-axle Class VIb vehicles must use Merak Ferry Port (Merak-Bakauheni route)
Three-axle cargo vehicles (Class VIb) and heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VII, VIII, and IX) exempt from freight transport restrictions must use BBJ Bojonegara port (Bojonegara-Muara Pilu route)
Three-axle cargo vehicles (Class VIb) and heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VII, VIII, and IX) subject to freight transport restrictions will be directed to buffer zones at BBJ Bojonegara until restrictions end
Return travel period – routes to Java:
Pedestrians, bicycles, motor vehicles (Classes II, III, IVa, Va, and VIa) must use Bakauheni Ferry Port (Bakauheni-Merak route)
Light and medium cargo vehicles (Classes IVb, Vb, VIb) exempt from freight transport restrictions will be served via BBJ Muara Pilu port (Muara Pilu-Bojonegara route)
Three-axle cargo vehicles (Class VIb) and heavy cargo vehicles (Classes VII, VIII, and IX) subject to freight transport restrictions will be directed to buffer zones at rest areas KM 172B (Terbanggi Besar-Pematang Panggang-Kayu Agung tollway), KM 87B, KM 49B, and KM 20B (Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar tollway), and various non-tollway sections
For Ketapang, Gilimanuk, Lembar, Tanjung Wangi, Gilimas, and Bulusan ferry ports:
From 13 March 2026, 12:00 to 29 March 2026, 24:00 local time, the following regulations apply at Ketapang-Gilimanuk ports:
Priority is given to pedestrians, bicycles, motor vehicles (Classes II, III, IVa, Va, VIa), whilst heavy cargo vehicles (Classes Vb, VIb, VII, VIII, and IX) are restricted and not prioritised
The Movable Bridge (MB) terminal will serve designated vehicle classes according to operational capacity.
