Before Praperadilan Rejection, Roy Suryo Receives Birthday Surprise from Supporters at South Jakarta District Court, First Cake Slice for Former Deputy Police Chief

Roy Suryo, a suspect in an alleged defamation and slander case related to the purported fake diploma of Joko Widodo (Jokowi), received a birthday surprise before the verdict hearing of his second pretrial motion at the South Jakarta District Court on Monday, 20 July 2026. “My 58th birthday,” Roy Suryo told visitors at the South Jakarta District Court. Roy Suryo turned 58 on 18 July 2026. The surprise was given at around 12:49 WIB by a number of his supporters. The supporters, predominantly women wearing pink floral-patterned hijabs, brought a brownie cake while singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song for Roy. Afterwards, Roy cut the birthday cake. The first slice was handed to former Deputy Police Chief Komjen (Ret.) Oegroseno, who was present to follow the trial proceedings. On the same day, the South Jakarta District Court held the second pretrial hearing with the agenda of reading the verdict on Roy’s challenge regarding the validity of his designation as a suspect by the Polda Metro Jaya. The pretrial motion was filed by Roy on 2 July 2026 and registered under case number 108/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL. In the case, the respondents were the Polda Metro Jaya Chief cq Director of General Criminal Investigation cq Head of Sub-Directorate for State Security cq Investigation Team as Respondent I, and the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office cq Assistant for General Crimes cq South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office cq Public Prosecutor Team as Respondent II. Previously, in early July 2026, Roy won a pretrial motion regarding the search, arrest, and detention against him. The judge at that time declared that the detention carried out by Polda Metro Jaya did not meet subjective requirements and was therefore invalid. However, the judge emphasised that the formal defects in the search, arrest, and detention did not automatically nullify the entire investigation process. In addition, Roy filed another pretrial motion on 15 July 2026 seeking compensation from Polda Metro Jaya. The motion was registered under case number 118/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL in the compensation classification.
