Before Parliament, Purbaya Dismisses Rumour That State Budget Will Only Last Two Weeks
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has dismissed rumours suggesting that the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) would only last two weeks amid a surge in global oil prices.
Purbaya revealed that the rumour had even circulated internally within the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) during the period when global oil prices were rising.
“If fuel prices don’t increase, will our APBN hold up for the entire year? Because there are people saying my money will only last two weeks and it’s gone—even not from outside but from people in the Ministry of Finance itself who spread such rumours,” Purbaya stated during a meeting with Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (6/4/2026).
He emphasised that Indonesia’s fiscal condition remains within safe limits, as the government has prepared various scenarios to address fluctuations in global oil prices.
According to him, Kemenkeu routinely conducts simulations for various oil price levels, from $80 to $100 per barrel, along with mitigation measures.
“As soon as oil prices rise, we immediately conduct exercises. What if it’s $80, how about $90, up to $100, including the mitigations,” Purbaya said.
From these simulation results, the government ensures that the budget deficit remains controlled at around 2.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), even if oil prices are at high levels.
Under these conditions, Purbaya assured that subsidised fuel (BBM) prices can be maintained without excessively burdening the APBN.
In addition, the government also has fiscal buffers to face the worst-case scenarios, including if oil prices surge beyond assumptions.
“So it’s not true that the APBN will only last two weeks. We’ve calculated everything and our budget is still safe,” he said.
