Before Her Death, Dr Icha Had Expressed a Desire to End Her Life

The family of Dr Eliza Princela Utami Pakaenoni, known as Dr Icha, has disclosed that prior to her death, the doctor underwent an examination at the Dewantara Mental Healthcare Main Clinic. According to the family’s statement, the results indicated that Dr Icha was suffering from severe depression without psychotic symptoms following a psychological shock. “She experienced severe depression and is an introvert, so she only communicated with me, her uncle, and her father. She said, ‘I’m stressed, I want to go home to Kefa, I’m traumatised seeing these three people,’” said her uncle, Fabianus Banase, as quoted from a YouTube broadcast on Sunday. The family also stated they had scheduled a follow-up examination at Bhayangkara Hospital in Kupang for Friday, 26 June 2026. However, before the examination could take place, Dr Icha was found dead. “We had planned to take her for a follow-up check-up at Bhayangkara Hospital. But God willed otherwise, our child passed away first,” he said. Fabianus also mentioned that his niece had expressed a desire to end her life after the incident. “She even said at one point, ‘I’d rather die so that my friends won’t become victims,’” he added. For context, Dr Icha’s death is suspected to have been triggered by an act of intimidation while she was on duty at the Emergency Department of Leona Kefamenanu Hospital, North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The incident began on Saturday, 13 June 2026, when a child patient who had been bitten by a snake was referred to the emergency department. Dr Icha was the doctor on duty at the time. According to the family, the deceased had treated the patient according to the hospital’s standard operating procedures and had consulted with a paediatric specialist. Based on the medical examination results, the patient was not yet recommended to receive a certain vaccine. Furthermore, the vaccine requested by the patient’s family was not available at the hospital. The family stated that the situation became tense when the patient’s family refused to accept the medical explanation. According to Dr Icha’s uncle, Victor Manbait, a member of the patient’s family spoke in a raised voice and claimed to be a member of the TTU Regional House of Representatives.
