Beef supply stable during holidays

JAKARTA: Jakartans should not worry about soaring prices of beef and chicken during the Idul Fitri holidays because supplies are sufficient, an official says.

"We have monitored the latest supplies of both commodities in markets across the capital and we found the supply is relatively stable," City Agency for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs head Edy Setiarto said.

Edy said the agency had anticipated the rising demand of beef by preparing an extra supply of 2,800 tons.

Around 2,500 tons was prepared by the Association of Indonesian Beef Importers (Aspidi), while city-owned beef supplier Dharma Jaya prepared the remaining 300 tons.

"More than 90,000 other livestock are also being readied at slaughterhouses in Tambun, Bekasi and Cakung, North Jakarta. Once the demand is on the rise, we will slaughter these livestock," he said. --JP
