Ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah, prices of essential goods in various regions have begun to rise, including beef, a key consumption item for communities during the holiday. The seasonal surge in demand, which occurs annually, has driven beef prices up significantly in several areas of Indonesia.

In Palembang City, South Sumatra, beef prices in several traditional markets have reportedly jumped sharply to Rp180,000 per kilogram from the previous Rp140,000. This increase coincides with heightened shopping activity as residents prepare to welcome the festive day.

“On H-2 Eid this year, beef prices reached Rp180,000/kg,” said Tika, a beef butcher trader at Pasar 7 Ulu in Palembang, on Thursday, 19 March 2026.

She explained that the price hike has occurred gradually since H-7 Eid, in line with the increasing number of buyers at traditional markets.

“On Wednesday, 18 March 2026, beef prices were still at Rp170,000/kg. Today, the price has risen again to Rp180,000/kg,” she said.

Similar conditions are also occurring at Pasar Induk Jakabaring. Gani, a beef butcher trader at the market, stated that public demand continues to increase ahead of Eid, even as prices have risen.

However, prices at Pasar Induk Jakabaring are relatively slightly lower than other traditional markets in Palembang, ranging between Rp170,000 and Rp175,000 per kilogram.

According to Gani, this price increase is influenced by the high costs from agents or slaughterhouses, which adjust to the surge in consumer purchasing power.

“Although prices have risen, it is accompanied by a drastic increase in consumer purchasing power. This morning alone, the butchered beef sold reached around 40-50 kilograms,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Meulaboh, West Aceh Regency, beef and buffalo meat prices have also experienced a significant surge, particularly in the context of the meugang tradition, which is part of the local community’s culture ahead of Eid.

Fresh meat prices in the area have now exceeded Rp170,000 per kilogram, much higher than the normal range of Rp120,000 to Rp140,000 per kilogram.
