Beef Prices in Sidoarjo Soar to Rp130,000 per Kilogram as Supply Dwindles

The price of beef in a number of traditional markets in Sidoarjo Regency has soared to Rp130,000 per kilogram over the past month. The price increase has been triggered by a shrinking supply of cattle to slaughterhouses (TPH) in the area.

Observations at Pasar Induk Larangan and Pasar Krian show that super-quality beef, which previously ranged from Rp90,000 to Rp100,000 per kilogram, has now reached Rp130,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, rawon stewing beef is being sold at Rp120,000 per kilogram.

A beef trader at Pasar Larangan, Sari, confirmed the price surge across all beef varieties.

“Super quality is now Rp130,000, while rawon cuts are Rp120,000 per kilogram,” Sari said on Thursday (6/8).

The decline in the supply of slaughter-ready cattle at the abattoir has forced wholesalers and traders to compete for their share. This situation has automatically driven up capital costs at the slaughterhouse level.

Another beef trader, Kusmiati, complained about the impact of the increase, which has led to a 50 percent drop in sales turnover due to the lack of buyers.

“They say cattle are expensive now, so prices from the slaughterhouse are already high. Sales are very quiet, down by half,” Kusmiati said.

In addition to beef, other food commodities in Sidoarjo are also beginning to creep upwards. The price of cut chicken, which was previously around Rp30,000 per kilogram, has now risen to Rp35,000 per kilogram. Traders are hoping the local government will step in soon to carry out market interventions to stabilise supplies and staple food prices.
