Beckenbauer proposes Platini for UEFA chief

MUNICH, Germany (AP): Franz Beckenbauer, ruling himself out
for the top job in European soccer, said on Friday that former
French star Michel Platini would be a good candidate for the UEFA
presidency.

"He has great chances to be elected. He was a player, coach,
then copresident of the World Cup organizing committee in
France," Beckenbauer told the German sports news agency SID.

UEFA, the European soccer governing body, is now headed by
Lennart Johansson of Sweden. Elections are due next year.

Beckenbauer, the former German star, is now a vice president
of the German soccer federation (DFB), chairman of Bayern Munich
and president of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup
in Germany.
