'Becak' operation in Tangerang

TANGERANG (JP): Tangerang regency will cut the number of becak (pedicabs), from over 10,000 at present to 4,500, allowed to operate in the city, as of Saturday.

E. Herry Kusnadi, a spokesman for the regency, told Antara that the move is aimed mainly at reducing the high occurrence of traffic jams, caused by the large amount of becak in the area.

Out of the 4,500 becak, 1,500 will be allowed to operate in downtown Tangerang, with the remainder in Ciledug, Jatiuwung, Cipondoh, Batuceper and Benda districts.

The regency will also ban becak from 12 major roads, including Jl. Daan Mogot, Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Jl. Gatot Subroto, Jl. Otto Iskandardinata, Jl. Hasyim Ashari, Jl. Cokroaminoto and Jl. Moch. Thoha and in three villages, Sukasari, Sukarasa and Gerendeng. (hhr)
