Becak Drivers in Cirebon Receive Rp1.4 Million Compensation from West Java Governor
Twenty becak drivers at Pasar Minggu in Cirebon Regency received compensation from the West Java Governor for ceasing work during the Idul Fitri holiday travel surge and return period in 1447 H. Taslim, one of the becak drivers, expressed his satisfaction with the compensation of Rp1.4 million that he received on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
“We have 20 people receiving compensation from the Governor. This is the first year we’ve received this,” he stated in a written statement.
Taslim said he was ready to comply with the temporary work suspension policy during H-7 and H+7 Idul Fitri, or for 14 days without transporting passengers in the Pasar Baru area of Cirebon Regency.
“Thank you, we will comply because we have received the compensation. The money will go towards paying zakat fitrah and buying clothes for my children,” he said.
According to Taslim, the government compensation exceeded his typical daily earnings. He usually earns around Rp50,000 per day operating his becak, and on quiet days he might not earn anything at all.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi provided compensation to angkot, delman and becak drivers amounting to Rp1.4 million each to prevent them from operating during the Idul Fitri travel surge and return period. The objective is to reduce congestion on mudik routes in West Java.
“A total of 5,000 angkot, becak and delman drivers received compensation of Rp1.4 million per person,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi praised the West Java Governor’s initiative to provide compensation to traditional transport operators to facilitate the mudik flow in West Java.
“Apart from facilitating traffic flow, it also assists becak drivers during Idul Fitri. I urge other regions to follow the West Java Governor’s approach,” he added.
Dudy also called on coin collectors operating in the Pantura Kali Sewo route area to cease their activities, warning that such work endangered both themselves and road users’ safety. He also assured that West Java’s pantura route would remain smooth and safe for passage.
