'Becak' driver, orphans get gifts

BEKASI: Some 3,000 becak (pedicab) drivers and 1,500 orphans
received Idul Fitri gifts from two different political parties in
Bekasi on Monday, the last day of the Ramadhan fasting month.

The becak drivers received from the Bekasi branch of the
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) T-shirts
bearing the picture of the party's chairwoman Megawati
Soekarnoputri, who is also the country's president.

The party's Bekasi branch chairman, Mochtar Mohamad, said that
distributing the gifts was not a part of the party's campaign for
next year's general election.

Meanwhile, the Golkar Party distributed rice and cash to
around 1,500 orphans in Jatiwarna.

Branch official Awing Asmawi declined to give details on the
cost and said the aid had nothing to do with the party's
political campaign ahead of the election. -- Antara
