Jakarta – The Greater Ciliwung Cisadane River Basin Authority (BBWSCC) has prepared a series of strategic measures to preserve the remaining natural lakes (situ) across the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) region.

These efforts are being undertaken amid the diminishing number of lakes, which is considered to exacerbate rising flood risks. From the thousands of lakes previously recorded, only 185 remain under BBWSCC’s supervision.

The reduction has been driven by land conversion and spatial planning changes, with many lake areas transformed into permanent structures such as residential developments.

“First, conduct studies and establish lake boundaries,” said David in a written statement received on Sunday (1 March 2026).

Boundary demarcation is undertaken to provide certainty regarding the lake’s perimeter, preventing further erosion caused by surrounding development.

The second step involves conducting studies on lake area management to enable them to function more optimally as natural flood control mechanisms.

Once the studies are completed, the third phase entails implementing and executing lake area improvements according to the technical study findings.

The fourth step involves strengthening maintenance of the lakes that have been improved.

Through sustained maintenance, BBWSCC hopes the remaining lakes can survive and continue to function maximally in absorbing rainfall and reducing overflow into rivers.
